About this program

The Department of Housing and Urban Development Public and Indian Housing Office distributed $2.96 billion in capital and management funding to public housing agencies under CFDA 14.885, with the most recent award dated December 1, 2009, making this program inactive for over 16 years.

This program was Recovery Act stimulus funding authorized under section 9 of the United States Housing Act of 1937. Awarded funds supported capital and management activities for public housing agencies, including modernization and development of public housing properties, with the explicit restriction that funds could not be used for operations or rental assistance. All 3,121 awards in the portfolio were Formula Grants distributed to eligible public housing agencies across all states.

The program concentrated all funding in a single federal agency—HUD's Public and Indian Housing Office—which awarded the entire $2.96 billion across 3,121 grants. Award activity was heavily front-loaded: 3,119 awards were made in October 2008, with only 2 additional awards in 2009. Recent representative awards included $4.651 million to California (October 2008), $4.295 million to Arizona (October 2008), $3.075 million to Pennsylvania (October 2008), and $2.444 million to North Carolina (September 2009). Award magnitudes ranged from under $20 thousand to approximately $18.5 million, with the largest single award being $18.510 million to Missouri in October 2008.

No grant opportunities are currently posted under this program. The program's last awards were made in December 2009 as part of American Recovery and Reinvestment Act stimulus allocation. This program is not an active funding vehicle for new applications.
