About this program

The National Institute of Standards and Technology under the Department of Commerce operates the Advanced Technology Program (CFDA 11.612), which last awarded a grant on February 1, 2008—over 18 years ago. This program is no longer active and should not be pursued.

The program funded cooperative agreements supporting industry partnerships to develop and commercialize high-risk, high-potential-impact technologies across broad application areas. Recent awards funded nanoscale fabrication processes, photovoltaic and solar technologies, fuel cell and energy storage systems, biotechnology platforms including antibody production and genetic engineering, advanced materials manufacturing, medical devices, semiconductor technologies, and next-generation diagnostics and sensing systems. Representative awards include transparent flexible solar modules ($6.6 million), a ubiquitous thermal imager ($14.3 million), genome sequencing technology ($15.9 million), terabit photonic integrated circuits ($12.7 million), and high-definition metrology for sub-micron manufacturing ($12.4 million).

From its inception in 2001 through 2008, the program issued 384 Cooperative Agreements totaling $843 million in federal obligations, with recipients contributing an additional $487 million in matching funds. The National Institute of Standards and Technology was the sole funding source for all awards. Award volume declined sharply after 2004: 78 awards in 2002, declining to 52 in 2007 and only 9 in 2008, the final award year. Typical award magnitudes ranged from roughly $700 thousand to $2 million, though larger projects reached $5–$16 million.

No grant opportunities under this program are currently open. The most recent award dates to February 2008, and the portfolio shows no disbursements since that date. This program concluded operations nearly two decades ago and does not represent a viable funding avenue.
