About this program
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) under the Department of Commerce administers the Weights and Measures Service program (CFDA 11.606) to provide leadership and technical resources assuring accuracy of quantities and quantity representations in commercial transactions, promoting a uniform national weights and measures system, and harmonizing national and international legal metrology standards.
Program activity is minimal. The portfolio reflects a single grant award obligating $100 thousand, made on October 1, 2020—over six years ago. No subsequent grant awards appear in the record, and no recent grant opportunities have been posted.
The funded activity centered on firefighter personal protective equipment research and development, specifically investigation of occupational exposure in wildland firefighters to support development of modernized PPE and standard operating procedures aimed at reducing cancer morbidity and mortality in this high-risk population. The $99,953.93 project grant ran from October 2020 through September 2021 under award 60NANB20D192.
The program's stated scope encompasses education and technical advice to states, state and industry metrologists, manufacturers of weights and measures devices, and device users; U.S. representation and participation in the International Organization of Legal Metrology to harmonize standards; technical support for metric system transition to businesses, state and local governments, standards organizations, and educational institutions; development of model laws and regulations; laboratory upgrades; technical studies; training delivery; and technical support to the National Conference on Weights and Measures. However, the single funded award in the portfolio does not align with this published scope.
All funding flows through NIST, and assistance is provided in the form of Project Grants. Eligible applicants include states, political subdivisions of states, private industry, and the general public.
Given the six-year gap since the most recent award and absence of currently open solicitations, this program appears inactive or dormant for external applicants at present.
