About this program
The Department of Agriculture National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) funds cooperative agreements under CFDA 10.950 to support agricultural data collection, statistical analysis, and dissemination activities, with the most recent award made on June 1, 2023.
Program activity has slowed significantly in recent years. The portfolio spans 281 awards since 2005, but annual award volume has contracted sharply: seven awards in 2022 dropped to just one in 2023, and no awards appear in 2024 or 2025. The program operates exclusively through Cooperative Agreements, which comprise 100 percent of the assistance-type mix. Combined federal obligated dollars total $394.6 million across the portfolio lifetime, with a negligible non-federal cost-share component ($395.1 million combined total obligated). NASS is the sole funding agency; no other federal entities participate in this program.
Recent awards fund a diverse scope of agricultural data work: the June 2023 agroclimate agreement ($96,893); the December 2022 Census of Agriculture data collection ($45,000); a Puerto Rico Census of Agriculture conducted in 2022 ($231,905); geospatial application maintenance and enhancement for CropScape and VegScape systems ($40,000); Census of Agriculture expanded area frame enumeration ($250,000); and large maize genomics initiatives including the Genomes to Fields (G2F) project ($4.76 million awarded in April 2020). Award magnitudes typically range from $5,000 to $100,000, though mega-awards in the $20 million to $44 million range have been obligated for data collection operations in prior years (2014–2015). Eligible applicants include farmers, agricultural producers, marketing and processing groups, state and local governments, educational institutions, and the general public, including entities in U.S. Territories.
No current grant opportunities are listed in the recent-opportunities block, indicating the program is not actively soliciting applications at this time. The one-year gap in awards since mid-2023 and the sharp decline in award cadence raise questions about near-term funding availability or program restructuring. Agreements are issued subject to annual appropriations.
