About this program

The Department of Agriculture Forest Service is funding establishment of rental programs for portable temporary bridges, bridge mats, and water crossing structures to support timber harvesting and forest management while minimizing stream disturbance, under CFDA 10.721, with the most recent award disbursed on 19 August 2026.

The program has remained active and consistently funded since its inception in 2022. Seventy-eight awards totaling $35.7 million in federal obligations have been disbursed across a four-year period, averaging 14.5 awards per year. Recent activity shows a spike to 27 awards in 2025 followed by 14 through August 2026. The portfolio consists entirely of Project Grants. Grant periods run 1–3 years with extension capability on written request.

Funding is distributed across seven Forest Service regional offices. The top three funders by award count and federal dollars are the R10-Alaska Region (26 awards, $17.5 million), R9-Eastern Region (23 awards, $7.3 million), and R8-Southern Region (19 awards, $8.2 million), representing approximately 95 percent of the award count and 98 percent of federal dollars. Remaining awards flow through R1-Northern, R2-Rocky Mountain, R6-Pacific Northwest, and other regional offices.

Typical award magnitudes cluster in the $400 thousand to $600 thousand range. Representative recent awards include a $2 million award to Alaska for a multi-year temporary bridge inventory accessible via terrestrial and maritime routes (awarded 14 January 2025); a $1.75 million award for the Kake Temporary Bridge Project in Alaska (awarded 15 January 2025); and a $500 thousand award to Colorado supporting access to an additional 2,000 acres producing approximately 51 million board feet of timber (awarded 20 July 2026). Larger outliers include a $2.25 million award for the Koniag Afognak Island Road System Temporary Bridge Project in Alaska (awarded 30 April 2024).

Eligible applicants are States (including the District of Columbia) and Federally Recognized Indian Tribes and Tribal Governments.
