About this program
The Department of Agriculture Forest Service awarded its most recent Forest Stewardship Program grant on August 10, 2026 (CFDA 10.678), supporting technical assistance delivery to private forest landowners across 267 million acres owned by 10.6 million private owners nationwide.
The program funds technical assistance to non-industrial private forest landowners for forest management planning, active management implementation, and connection to market opportunities and financial assistance programs. Recent awards demonstrate a broad portfolio: Emergency Forest Restoration Program support following wildfires, hurricanes, and other natural disasters; Conservation Reserve Program technical assistance for tree plantings and riparian buffers; forest health and stewardship planning; wildfire hazard reduction; and restoration activities including reforestation, debris removal, and native plant material propagation. Work is delivered through state forestry agencies and partners, leveraging 3,500-plus state service foresters.
The program portfolio spans 1,257 total awards from 2003 to present, with 43 to 46 awards annually over the past five years; 7 awards have been obligated so far in 2026. Awards are predominantly Project Grants (94%), with a smaller Cooperative Agreement component (6%). Combined federal dollars obligated total $189.9 million, with an additional $81.1 million in non-federal cost share, bringing total dollars obligated to $271 million.
The Department of Agriculture Forest Service dominates funding, accounting for 793 awards and $105.3 million in federal dollars. Regional Forest Service offices—particularly R8 (Southern Region, $33.5 million across 105 awards) and R9 (Eastern Region, $31.1 million across 190 awards)—follow. Eleven distinct federal agencies participate in the portfolio; the International Institute of Tropical Forestry and State and Private Forestry Program account for smaller shares.
Recent awards range from $10 thousand to $2.3 million in federal obligation. Representative recent grants include $1.46 million obligated by the Forest Service to Oregon for technical assistance to wildfire-affected landowners, $916 thousand to Michigan for Emergency Forest Restoration Program support following an ice storm, and $650 thousand to Oregon for disaster technical assistance. The program also funds state-level stewardship coordination: $505.9 thousand to Minnesota and $433.3 thousand to Virginia for multi-year forest management assistance delivery.
Eligible applicants are state forestry or equivalent state agencies across all states and U.S. territories; non-profit organizations and institutions of higher learning may be eligible on a limited or situational basis. Individual landowners seeking assistance apply through their state forestry agency. Awards normally run 1 to 3 years with a five-year maximum.
