About this program
The Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) funds nutrition education projects for participants in the Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR) through Assistance Listing 10.594, with the most recent grant award issued on September 25, 2024, and an open cooperative agreement solicitation due July 31, 2026.
The program supports development and implementation of nutrition education activities for FDPIR participants and program staff, including nutrition education classes, educational materials, and garden-based nutrition education aligned with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and MyPlate guidance. Eligible applicants include Tribal organizations, nonprofit organizations, American Indian Tribal Colleges, accredited public or private academic institutions of higher education, and private organizations with demonstrated expertise working with Tribal communities. Private organizations, community-based organizations, networks, coalitions, state agencies, and other nonprofits that can demonstrate three years of experience working with or on behalf of Indian Tribal Organizations and Federally Recognized Tribes may also apply.
The program consists entirely of Project Grants across its 74 awards since 2016. FNS dominates funding; the portfolio reports two distinct funding agencies both named as FNS with 69 awards ($5 million obligated) and 5 awards ($483 thousand obligated). Combined federal dollars obligated total $5.5 million. Award activity has declined sharply: 2020–2021 saw 14–15 awards annually, dropping to 9 in 2022, 2 in 2023, and 1 in 2024. Recent awards range from $72,500 to $500,000, with typical annual grant values ranging from tens of thousands to approximately $100,000–$200,000. Representative recent awards include a $72,500 grant (September 2024), a $500,000 award (September 2023), and a $473,000 award (August 2023).
An open cooperative agreement opportunity (USDA-FNA-FDPIR-NUT-ED-2026, due July 31, 2026) offers up to $500,000 for an innovative nutrition education project for FDPIR participants and staff, with performance period September 2026 to September 2028. The solicitation states eligibility is limited to "Other" applicant types and requires expertise in working with Tribal communities.
