About this program
The Department of Agriculture Economic Research Service (ERS) funds economic research and analysis on agricultural, food, natural resource, and rural economic topics through CFDA 10.250, with the most recent grant award issued on August 1, 2024.
Award activity has declined significantly in recent years. The program distributed 583 total awards spanning from 2003 to 2024, but annual awards have contracted from 10 in 2020 to just 2 in 2024. Combined federal dollars obligated total $54.7 million, with a non-federal match contribution bringing combined obligation to $55.8 million. Cooperative Agreements dominate the portfolio at 87 percent of awards (509 agreements), with Project Grants comprising the remaining 13 percent (74 awards). ERS is the sole funding agency.
The program funds economic research examining commodity markets, food security, trade dynamics, agricultural productivity, rural employment, climate adaptation, natural resource management, and livestock industry structure. Recent awards reflect this breadth: a $2.01 million Cooperative Agreement focused on outreach and applied research extending through August 2027; a $1.02 million Project Grant investigating agricultural economics perspectives; a $327,826 Cooperative Agreement assessing biotechnology adoption and trade implications for African agriculture; and smaller Project Grants of $35,000 supporting outreach on food and agricultural policy issues. Eligible recipients include any individual or organization in the U.S. and U.S. Territories.
ERS operates under a one-year fund availability cycle with a five-year maximum agreement lifespan. Funds obligated in year one must be reimbursed by August 30 of year five. The program builds on unique or confidential federal data sources, provides national coordination, and addresses questions with short-run policy payoff or immediate government relevance.
No current grant opportunities appear in the source material. The recent award cadence and the program's reliance on ERS-identified research priorities suggest applicants should monitor ERS communications directly for solicitation notices rather than expect regular, predictable funding announcements.
