About this program

The Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service funds research and development projects under the Agricultural Research Basic and Applied Research program (CFDA 10.001), with the most recent grant award issued September 1, 2026.

The program funds applied and basic agricultural research conducted in cooperation with the ARS in-house research portfolio, spanning crop improvement, pest and disease management, food safety, natural resource conservation, pollinator health, aquaculture genetic improvement, and related life sciences work. Recent awards demonstrate funding for invasive species management across the Mississippi River Watershed, pathogen characterization and disease forecasting tools for soybeans and small grains, wheat and barley breeding for Fusarium head blight resistance, aflatoxin contamination reduction in corn, water management under drought stress on the High Plains, and aquaculture genetics for oysters and seaweed.

The funding mix is predominantly Cooperative Agreements (76 percent of 14,887 total awards) with a smaller share of Project Grants (24 percent). The Agricultural Research Service itself funds 12,005 awards totaling $2.57 billion in federal dollars obligated, while the ARS Central Program Planning Coordination and Support channel adds 2,874 awards worth $674.1 million. The Navy Office of Naval Research and Department of Defense entities account for a marginal share. Combined federal dollars obligated total $3.25 billion across the program's lifetime; non-federal cost-share adds $20 million.

Award activity has declined in recent years: 658 awards in 2022 dropped to 102 in 2026 year-to-date. Typical recent awards range from $30 thousand to $900 thousand; larger multi-year consortia for drought management, disease forecasting, and breeding programs reach $500 thousand to $1 million. Recipients are primarily nonprofit institutions of higher education and nonprofit research organizations. The program enforces a five-year maximum period of performance with no renewals, only extensions. Peer review is required. No current grant opportunities are posted in the source material.
