About this opportunity

The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) is seeking qualified Executive Architects through a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) for various Capital Improvement Projects focusing on laboratory renovation and remodeling. The procurement targets architectural design services for multiple research laboratory projects across two primary groups: Group A (Center for the Health Sciences) and Group B (College/Schools), which include facilities such as the David Geffen School of Medicine, Samueli School of Engineering, and California NanoSystems Institute. The scope encompasses comprehensive design services including pre-design, building system investigation, programming, space planning, concept design, schematic design, design development, construction documents, bidding, and construction administration for wet, clinical, BSL-1, BSL-2, and BSL-3 laboratory spaces. UCLA may select up to three Executive Architects for each project group, with selection based on qualifications outlined in Attachment A of the RFQ. Key dates include an advertisement period from May 5-27, 2025, with questions due by May 12, 2025, and final submissions required by 10:00 a.m. on May 27, 2025. Candidates can submit for one or multiple project sites using the same submittal, with the understanding that UCLA reserves the right to assign architects to projects where they are most qualified.

The RFQ emphasizes equal opportunity, with each candidate potentially required to demonstrate an Equal Employment Opportunity policy. The University indicates a commitment to providing equal access to contracts within legal and policy constraints. Potential project budgets range from $3 million to $10 million, with design fees estimated between $250,000 and $750,000 per individual project. The final selection and appointment of Executive Architects remains contingent upon project approval by the UC Board of Regents or their delegated authority. While the RFQ covers full design services, UCLA maintains the right to defer negotiations for services beyond pre-design studies until that phase is complete. Candidates must register and download the complete RFQ packet from http://www.uclaplanroom.com, which requires creating a login and password. The project will be implemented on the UCLA campus, under the jurisdiction of the Campus Building Official and Campus Fire Marshal, with the potential for multi-year engagement up to three years.
