About this opportunity
Botetourt County is soliciting quotes for a historic preservation project involving the restoration of a chimney on a 19th-century slave kitchen located at the Greenfield Preservation Area. The Request for Quotes (RFQ) seeks a contractor with specialized expertise in historic restoration to rebuild the handmade brick chimney stack, which is part of a structure listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Specific project requirements include reconstructing the chimney to support a functional fireplace, installing new firebricks and a clay flue liner set in clay fire mortar, and completing all work in strict accordance with the Secretary of the Interior Standards for historic preservation. An archaeological investigation of the chimney foundation is mandatory, and contractors must provide detailed documentation of all replacement materials. The solicitation was posted on March 14, 2025, with quotes due by March 27, 2025, and can be submitted through the Bonfire platform or via email to purchasing@botetourtva.gov. Potential bidders must demonstrate technical capability to work with historic structures and adhere to preservation guidelines.
No specific set-aside designations or restrictions for disadvantaged enterprises were explicitly mentioned in the solicitation. The contract appears open to qualified historic restoration contractors with demonstrable experience in preservation work, particularly those specializing in 19th-century architectural restoration. While no budget range was specified, the complexity of the project—involving archaeological investigation, specialized materials, and adherence to national historic preservation standards—suggests a potentially significant investment. The project's scope is limited to the chimney restoration of a single historic kitchen structure within the Greenfield Preservation Area. No information was provided about incumbent vendors or existing technological infrastructure that would require integration. Interested contractors should carefully review the full solicitation details and be prepared to provide comprehensive documentation of their proposed restoration approach and material specifications.

The kitchen is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, NRHP. The work will have to be completed with the Secretary of the Interior Standards, with all of the replacement materials, stating what those materials are. This will also require an archaeological investigation as part of the chimney foundation.Submit quotes through Bonfire or email purchasing@botetourtva.gov.
