About this opportunity

This state and local contract opportunity is for the maintenance of VMware software from Broadcom for the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA). Broadcom acquired VMware in 2024. The VMware software provides a virtual infrastructure that allows virtual systems to run on physical systems, reducing costs for hardware, cooling, networking, space, and licensing. The maintenance contract includes virtual desktop access, disaster recovery/avoidance capabilities, application presentation, mobile device management, monitoring, and capacity planning. SHA cannot support its virtual infrastructure for servers and endpoints without renewing this critical software maintenance contract. The contract opportunity was posted on August 7, 2024, with a due date of August 9, 2024. The procurement takes the form of an Invitation for Bid (IFB), requiring bidders to submit a proposal affidavit and a non-disclosure agreement.

The contract opportunity does not provide details on any set-aside designations, restrictions on eligible organizations, or listed incumbent vendors. The available information also does not include specifics on the award value or budget range. However, it is clear that the maintenance of the VMware software is essential for SHA to continue supporting its virtual infrastructure and IT environment in a cost-effective manner. The renewal of this contract is necessary for SHA to ensure the availability of virtual systems, virtual desktops, disaster recovery, and other critical capabilities for its operations.

Opportunity text

SHA is requesting the maintenance of VMware software from Broadcom be renewed. Broadcom purchased VMware in 2024. VMWARE is a virtual infrastructure that allows virtual systems to run on physical systems reducing costs for hardware, cooling, networking, space, and licensing. This software maintenance also includes the ability for SHA computer users to access needed applications and data via virtual desktops instead of physical desktops, further reducing hardware and management costs. Additional software allows SHA to protect its data in Disaster Recovery/Disaster Avoidance situations by replicating high-priority systems and quickly recovering them if/when needed at an alternate site. Lastly, software to allow application presentation to SHA users, mobile device management, monitoring software to assist with the rightsizing of the environment, and capacity planning are also included. SHA cannot support our virtual infrastructure for servers and endpoints if not renewed.
