About this opportunity
The Washington State Department of Commerce is soliciting applications for the Industrial Symbiosis Grant Program, which aims to reduce, reuse, or eliminate industrial waste to benefit the state's circular economy. Grants ranging from $150,000 to $500,000 will be awarded to qualified applicants, including private businesses, non-profit organizations, tribal nations, and public/government agencies, to support the expansion of existing industrial symbiosis efforts, the implementation of new projects, or research and development into new areas and technologies to repurpose industrial waste. Applicants must have a minimum of five years combined experience in waste management or sustainable systems and secure a 1:1 non-state funding match. The program has a total budget of $2.85 million, including $2 million from the Climate Commitment Act account. Applications are due by November 1, 2024, and successful applicants will be notified of funding awards on or around November 22, 2024. Funded projects must be completed by June 30, 2025.
The Department of Commerce encourages eligible small and veteran-owned businesses to apply, and has agency goals for participation by minority-owned, women-owned, veteran-owned, and small businesses. The program aims to distribute grants across a diverse geographic area of the state, including both urban and rural regions, and avoid creating or worsening environmental health disparities in overburdened communities. There are no listed incumbent vendors or current contractors, and the program does not require the integration of any existing infrastructure or technology.
