About this opportunity
California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, in partnership with The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company, is conducting a prequalification bid for trade contractors to support the Cal Poly Student Housing Program. The procurement seeks qualified contractors for specific trade scopes, including Mobile Crane, Site Built Steel, Insulation, Sheet Metal, Doors & Hardware, Framing, Drywall & Plaster, Joint Sealants, and Trucking (Modules). The program's primary objective is to implement the 2035 Master Plan, which aims to create housing for approximately 15,000 student beds, encompassing three new construction projects at the North Mountain and K-2 parking sites and renovations of six existing residential halls. The prequalification period is open from April 29, 2025, at 12:00 PM PT to May 13, 2025, at 5:00 PM PT, with interested trade contractors required to submit documentation directly to Whiting-Turner. Evaluation will focus on contractors' qualifications, capabilities, and ability to meet the specific trade requirements for this comprehensive housing development program.
The procurement does not explicitly specify set-aside designations or restrictions for disadvantaged enterprises. The project is subject to Prevailing Wage Rates, and a future Request for Proposal (RFP) will be issued exclusively to prequalified trade contractors who successfully submit all required deliverables. Preliminary design-build cost estimates indicate significant investment, with new housing projects ranging from $175 million to $275 million and renovation projects ranging from $24 million to $31 million. The phased approach is strategically designed to minimize disruption to campus life, with projects planned to be completed in a manner that ensures continuous student housing availability. While no incumbent vendors are specifically mentioned, the project represents a substantial long-term commitment to expanding and improving student housing infrastructure at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo.
