About this opportunity
The City of Brookhaven in partnership with DeKalb County is requesting proposals from artists to design and paint a fiberglass cow sculpture for the public art project "The Cows are Coming," with proposals due September 8, 2026, by 5:00 p.m. EST through the Bonfire Portal. Brookhaven and Atlanta metropolitan area artists are preferred, though artists from all locations may apply.
The scope is to paint a prefabricated fiberglass cow weighing approximately 125 pounds, which will be permanently displayed at a location to be determined. The artist must submit a cover letter, executive summary, biography, two minimum preliminary designs in electronic format, narrative description, maintenance plan, and itemized cost estimate. The artwork must be original, durable, high-quality, and suitable for permanent outdoor display with no commercial advertising or logos. Thematic alignment with "Brookhaven, Better Together," welcoming city identity, greenspace, or local landmarks is expected. The City provides all paint and supplies, covers transportation and installation, and assumes maintenance responsibilities after installation. The selected artist must warrant the work free of defects for four years following installation, with any deterioration due to material quality repaired or replaced at the artist's expense.
Total compensation is $3,000, with 50 percent due upon contract execution and 50 percent upon completion and City approval. The selected artist will be notified by September 18, 2026, and will perform painting work offsite at a city-owned location between September 24 and October 23, 2026, with a completion deadline of October 26, 2026.
Evaluation is weighted as follows: experience with public art (15 percent), artistic quality and originality (35 percent), alignment with project goals and themes (30 percent), safety and maintenance plan (15 percent), and itemized cost estimate (5 percent). Eligible applicants must be at least 18 years old. Questions are due September 2, 2026, by 3:30 p.m. EST.
