About this opportunity

The Department of the Interior's Bureau of Reclamation is offering the WaterSMART Grants: Water and Energy Efficiency Grants program for Fiscal Year 2024. This funding opportunity provides grants for projects that result in quantifiable water savings, implement renewable energy components, and support broader sustainability benefits in the Western United States and U.S. territories. Eligible applicants include states, tribes, irrigation districts, water districts, and nonprofit conservation organizations. Key evaluation criteria focus on quantifiable water savings, renewable energy implementation, benefits to disadvantaged communities, and complementing on-farm improvements. The application deadlines are February 22, 2024 and November 13, 2024.

The total available funding is dependent on appropriations, but the Bureau of Reclamation anticipates awarding approximately 40-50 projects per application period, with maximum federal funding of $500,000, $2,000,000, or $5,000,000 per project depending on the funding group. Successful applicants will be required to provide at least 50% cost share. Projects must be located in the Western United States or U.S. territories and are expected to be completed within 2-4 years of the award, depending on the funding group.
