About this opportunity

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is seeking research proposals focused on Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) through the Water Resources Research Act Program National Competitive Grants for Fiscal Year 2025. This competitive grant opportunity is limited to Water Resources Research Institutes, with any investigator at a U.S. institution of higher learning eligible to apply through these institutes. The research must address critical areas such as media-specific detection methods, atmospheric exchange studies, and molecular-level research on PFAS fate, transport, and effects. Evaluation criteria will emphasize scientific value, potential benefits, information transfer plans, and comprehensive proposal details. The application deadline is September 30, 2025, with a project period anticipated from February 1, 2026, to January 31, 2029.

The total funding available is $2,775,000, with nine expected awards and a maximum ceiling of $309,000 per award. Cost sharing is mandatory, requiring each federal dollar to be matched by at least one non-federal dollar. Recipients must adhere to strict reporting requirements, including an Annual Program Report within 90 days of the reporting period, and follow guidelines for data management and geospatial data standards. The grants will support research across the 50 states, District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, and Guam, with a focus on improving understanding and mitigation of PFAS in water resources.
