About this opportunity
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is seeking research proposals through the Water Resources Research Act Program National Competitive Grants for Fiscal Year 2025, specifically targeting aquatic invasive species research in the Upper Mississippi River Basin. Eligible applicants are Water Resources Research Institutes, with investigators from U.S. institutions of higher learning able to apply through these institutes. The grant focuses on three primary research priority areas: examining the effects of aquatic invasive species on water bodies, investigating characteristics that influence invasive species distribution and establishment, and assessing aquatic invasive species detection, spread, and management strategies. Proposals will be evaluated based on scientific value, potential benefits, integration with USGS science, and training potential, with a comprehensive peer review process. The application deadline is September 30, 2025, with an anticipated project start date of February 1, 2026.
The total program funding is up to $1,387,500, with an expected 4 awards and a maximum award ceiling of $346,875 per project. Successful applicants must provide a 1:1 non-federal matching fund contribution and complete the project by January 31, 2029. The research will be conducted through Water Resources Research Institutes established in each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Guam, with the Guam Institute also serving the Federated States of Micronesia and the Northern Mariana Islands. Proposals must adhere to specific reporting requirements, including an annual program report due by November 30th and comprehensive documentation of research outcomes and scientific findings.
