About this opportunity
The National Institute of Mental Health is soliciting applications for invasive neural recording studies focused on mental health-relevant questions, with an application deadline of January 7, 2028. This is a reissue of RFA-20-351 and carries the R21 Clinical Trial Optional mechanism under CFDA 93.242 (Mental Health Research Grants).
Eligible applicants include public and private higher education institutions, tribal organizations (federally and non-federally recognized), small businesses, for-profit organizations, nonprofits (501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3)), state and local governments, housing authorities, school districts, and special district governments. Additional eligible applicants include HBCUs, Hispanic-serving institutions, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions, AANAPISIs, TCCUs, faith-based and community-based organizations, regional organizations, eligible federal agencies, non-U.S. entities, and U.S. territories and possessions.
The NOFO targets a gap in scientific knowledge of neural circuit function related to mental health disorders. Researchers must pursue invasive neural recording studies that explore neural circuitry and dynamics underlying moods, emotions, cognitive functions, and behaviors with high spatial and temporal resolution. The stimulation capability via the same electrodes enables direct causal tests by modulating network dynamics. Applications must address specific questions suited to invasive recording modalities with high translational potential. Development of new technologies and therapies falls outside the scope of this funding opportunity.
Applications undergo scientific and technical merit review by peer review panels and the National Advisory Mental Health Council. Evaluation criteria include technical merit, program relevance, program balance, and availability of funds. Awards are competitive based on scientific merit and relevance to program priorities.
Synopsis
Reissue of RFA-20-351.The purpose of this Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) is to encourage applications to pursue invasive neural recording studies focused on mental health-relevant questions. Invasive neural recordings provide an unparalleled window into the human brain to explore the neural circuitry and neural dynamics underlying complex moods, emotions, cognitive functions, and behaviors with high spatial and temporal resolution. Additionally, the ability to stimulate, via the same electrodes, allows for direct causal tests by modulating network dynamics. This funding opportunity aims to target a gap in the scientific knowledge of neural circuit function related to mental health disorders. Researchers should target specific questions suited to invasive recording modalities that have high translational potential. Development of new technologies and therapies are outside the scope of this NOFO.
Eligibility
Other Eligible Applicants include the following: Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions; Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institutions (AANAPISISs); Eligible Agencies of the Federal Government; Faith-based or Community-based Organizations; Hispanic-serving Institutions; Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs); Indian/Native American Tribal Governments (Other than Federally Recognized); Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Organizations); Regional Organizations; Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities (TCCUs) ; U.S. Territory or Possession.
