About this opportunity
The National Institutes of Health is seeking applications for R01 research grants addressing health and healthcare disparities related to non-communicable and chronic diseases in Latin America and among U.S. Hispanics/Latinos, with an application deadline of June 3, 2026. Clinical trials are not allowed. Multi-disciplinary research teams must include at least one principal investigator or multiple principal investigator from institutions in Latin America.
Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), nonprofits (501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3)), small businesses, state and local governments, tribal governments and organizations, for-profit organizations, special district governments, city/township governments, independent school districts, and public or Indian housing authorities.
Supported research focuses on clinical epidemiology, evaluation of public and healthcare policies, and validation of measurements addressing non-communicable and chronic diseases with the highest disease burden and mortality in Latin America and among U.S. Hispanic/Latino populations. Research activities are expected to be performed at recipient institutions, with international partnerships required in Latin America.
The opportunity is assigned to six CFDA programs within NIH: Women's Health (93.313), Cancer Cause and Prevention Research (93.393), Oral Diseases and Disorders Research (93.121), Nursing Research (93.361), Minority Health and Health Disparities Research (93.307), and Aging Research (93.866). Co-funding or primary funding may derive from any of these institutes or centers.
Applications undergo dual scientific peer review for merit, followed by administrative review for program relevance. Award decisions consider scientific and technical merit, investigator competency, technical adequacy of design, adequacy of facilities and resources, budget necessity, and alignment with program objectives. Standard NIH retention requirements apply: grantees must retain financial and programmatic records for three years from submission of final financial status reports.
Synopsis
This Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) will support innovative, collaborative, and multi-disciplinary research focused on clinical epidemiology, evaluation of public and/or health care policies, and validation of measurements that address health and health care disparities related to non-communicable and chronic diseases (NCDs) with the highest disease burden and mortality in Latin America and among U.S. Hispanics/Latinos. Multi-disciplinary research teams would be expected to meaningfully collaborate with key partners that must include at least one PI or MPI from institutions in Latin America.
