About this opportunity

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), a division of the National Institutes of Health within the Department of Health and Human Services, seeks applications to establish Tuberculosis Research Advancement Centers that advance TB research through scientific leadership, mentorship of early-career investigators, pilot project funding, and collaborative research initiatives. Applicants must establish a multi-core structure including a mandatory Administrative Core and Developmental Core, plus a minimum of two additional cores selected from Basic Science Core, Clinical Science Core, or Specialty Core options. The program prioritizes the development of the next generation of TB researchers and catalyzes multidisciplinary, innovative TB science; notably, clinical trial proposals are not eligible. Evaluation will assess scientific merit based on significance, investigator qualifications, innovation, approach, and research environment, with additional consideration of how the proposed TRAC adds value to existing TB research and demonstrates justified need based on researcher utilization. The application deadline is June 10, 2026 at 5:00 PM local time, with scientific merit review scheduled for November 2026, advisory council review in January 2027, and an earliest start date of July 10, 2027.

NIAID intends to commit $4,000,000 in FY27 to support up to five awards with maximum direct costs of $600,000 per year and a maximum project period of five years. Each TRAC application must follow Multi-Project (M) submission instructions with specific page limits for the Overall section (1-6 pages), Administrative Core (1-6 pages), Developmental Core (1-12 pages), and additional cores (minimum 6 pages each). Research may be conducted at eligible higher education institutions (public and private), nonprofits, for-profit organizations, state and local governments, and federally recognized tribal governments, with only one application per institution permitted.
