About this opportunity
The National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) is soliciting cooperative agreement applications to fund the Tribal Undergraduate to Graduate Research Training and Leadership Experiences (TURTLE) program by January 25, 2027. Applicants must be federally recognized American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) Tribes, tribal colleges or universities, Tribal health programs, Tribal organizations, Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities (TCCUs), or Indian/Native American Tribal Governments other than federally recognized entities. Non-domestic entities and foreign components of U.S. organizations are ineligible.
The program provides phased awards: a development phase (UE5) and implementation phase (T32) to build training and mentoring infrastructure for doctoral students in biomedical research fields pursuing degrees at institutions across the United States and territories. The ultimate objective is to develop a pipeline of AI/AN scientists with technical, operational, and professional competencies to conduct health research on AI/AN populations and health disparities in a culturally appropriate and ethically rigorous manner, and to transition these individuals into careers in the biomedical research workforce.
Eligible applicants may be public or private higher education institutions, tribal organizations whether federally recognized or not, and tribal governments. The cooperative agreement structure emphasizes capacity building and institutional development rather than individual research grants.
This opportunity falls under CFDA 93.859 (Biomedical Research and Research Training). The program aligns with NIGMS's strategic priority to support research training that addresses health disparities and builds research capacity in underrepresented communities, consistent with the Institute's mission to fund basic biomedical research advancing human health understanding.
Synopsis
The purpose of the Tribal Undergraduate to Graduate Research Training and Leadership Experiences (TURTLE) program is to fund federally recognized American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) Tribes, tribal colleges or universities, Tribal health programs, or Tribal organizations (collectively termed, eligible Tribal Entities) to identify and develop a pool of scientists to conduct research on AI/AN health and health disparities. Through this Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO), NIGMS will provide support for a phased award to eligible AI/AN Tribal Entities to develop (UE5) and implement (T32) effective training and mentoring activities for research-oriented individuals earning a doctoral degree in a biomedical research field at a variety of institutions across the United States and territories. The overall purpose is to support the development of individuals who have the technical, operational, and professional skills required to conduct AI/AN health research in a culturally appropriate, ethically responsible and rigorous manner, to complete Ph.D.s in a biomedical field, and to transition into careers in the biomedical research workforce.
