About this opportunity

The Indian Health Service is soliciting applications for a second cohort of Tribal Epidemiology Centers serving currently unserved areas under cooperative agreement authority, with a hard deadline of July 13, 2026.

Eligible applicants are federally recognized Indian Tribes, Tribal organizations, intertribal consortia, and urban Indian organizations that represent or serve a population of at least 60,000 American Indians and Alaska Natives, as demonstrated by Tribal resolutions, census data, IHS user populations, clinical catchment data, or other scientifically and epidemiologically valid documentation. Applicants must describe the AI/AN population and Tribes to be represented; intertribal consortia and urban Indian organizations must be incorporated for the primary purpose of improving AI/AN health and must submit resolutions from each Tribe, Alaska Native village, or equivalent documentation from each urban Indian community represented.

Cooperative agreements fund project periods of up to five years. Within the project period, continuation applications must be submitted annually on a non-competitive basis via GrantSolutions.gov; additional support is subject to funds availability. TEC recipients must develop and conduct activities to achieve at least one epidemiology program in each of the 12 IHS administrative areas, coordinate and participate in projects of national scope, and share surveillance and other data collected. IHS will provide technical assistance, training, site visits, and coordination of epidemiological activities nationally.

Selection criteria include introduction, current epidemiological capacity and project objectives, approach and results and benefits, project evaluation, organizational capabilities and qualifications, and budget. Consideration is given to applicants demonstrating evidence of past and current epidemiological activities.

The program operates under CFDA 93.231 (Epidemiology Program). Grantees must maintain grant accounting records for three years after the end of each budget period, or longer if litigation or audit is pending.
