About this opportunity
The National Institute of Food and Agriculture is soliciting applications for the Tribal Colleges Extension Program–Capacity Applications under assistance listing 10.517, with applications due August 14, 2026; eligible applicants are limited to 1994 Land-Grant institutions (35 designated Tribal colleges and universities).
The program funds informal, community-based extension projects addressing agriculture, youth development, economic development, healthy lifestyles, natural resources, or other topics relevant to Tribal communities. Approximately $10.5 million in competitive funding will support approximately 35 awards; individual institutions receive an average of $1.2 million over the full four-year award period ($300,000 per year). Project periods run 48 months with potential for continuation funding for up to three additional years subject to satisfactory performance and available appropriations. No cost share or matching funds are required, though cost-sharing is encouraged.
NIFA prioritizes projects advancing Tribal Extension initiatives aligned with USDA Secretary's Memorandum 1078-020 priorities: increasing farmer profitability, expanding markets, protecting agricultural integrity from invasive species, promoting soil health, and improving human health through precision nutrition. Evaluation criteria, weighted most heavily toward potential for advancing Tribal Extension quality, also assess proposed approach and project management, key personnel and institutional support, budget cost-effectiveness, project evaluation methods, and data management soundness.
Applications submitted through Grants.gov must include a project summary (250 words maximum), project narrative (15 pages maximum, 1.5-spaced), data management plan (2 pages maximum), letters of commitment, senior/key person profiles, and detailed budgets for each of four years. No indirect costs are permitted. Award recipients must comply with research integrity requirements under 2 CFR Part 422.
