About this opportunity
The National Cancer Institute is soliciting applications for advanced pre-clinical research supporting translation of nanotechnology-based cancer diagnostics and therapeutics under the Toward Translation of Nanotechnology Cancer Interventions (TTNCI; R01 Clinical Trial Not Allowed) program, with applications due November 15, 2027. The R01 mechanism does not permit clinical trials. Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), state and county governments, city/township governments, tribal governments (federally recognized and other), 501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, small businesses, for-profit organizations, special district governments, independent school districts, public or Indian housing authorities, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian serving institutions, Hispanic-serving institutions, historically black colleges and universities, tribally controlled colleges and universities, and faith-based or community-based organizations. Non-domestic entities and non-domestic components of U.S. organizations are ineligible; however, foreign components as defined in the NIH Grants Policy Statement are allowed. The program aims to mature experimental nanomedicines utilizing nanoparticles and nano-devices that demonstrate strong potential to improve cancer treatment effectiveness through structural design and therapeutic or diagnostic cargo delivery. Awards are designed to advance nanotechnology-based interventions to a stage where they can progress to the NCI Experimental Therapeutics (NExT) program and other NCI translational initiatives. Funding falls under CFDA 93.395 (Cancer Treatment Research). Evaluation criteria assess scientific merit and general significance of proposed objectives, technical adequacy of experimental design and approach, investigator competency, adequacy of facilities and resources, necessity of budget components, and relevance to announced program objectives.
Synopsis
Through this Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO), entitled "Toward Translation of Nanotechnology Cancer Interventions" (TTNCI), the National Cancer Institute (NCI) encourages applications for advanced pre-clinical research, supporting translation of nanotechnology-based cancer diagnostics and therapeutics. TTNCI awards are designed to mature experimental nanomedicines relying on nanoparticles and nano-devices which demonstrate strong potential to improve cancer treatment effectiveness due to the combination of nanoparticle/nano-device structural design and/or therapeutic/diagnostic cargo which is delivered. TTNCI awards are expected to enable further development of proposed nanotechnology-based interventions to the stage in which they could continue on a developmental path towards the NCI Experimental Therapeutics (NExT) and other NCI translational programs.
Eligibility
Other Eligible Applicants include the following: Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions; Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institutions (AANAPISISs); Eligible Agencies of the Federal Government; Faith-based or Community-based Organizations; Hispanic-serving Institutions; Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs); Indian/Native American Tribal Governments (Other than Federally Recognized); Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Organizations); Regional Organizations; Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities (TCCUs) ; U.S. Territory or Possession; Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Organizations) are not eligible to apply. Non-domestic (non-U.S.) components of U.S. Organizations are not eligible to apply. Foreign components, as defined in the NIH Grants Policy Statement, are allowed.
