About this opportunity
The National Cancer Institute is soliciting applications for MetNet Research Projects under U01 Cooperative Agreement funding, with application due dates beginning June 5, 2026, and continuing through October 2028 on a semi-annual cycle. Clinical trials are not allowed. Applicants must commit minimum annual set-asides of $25,000 (years 2–5) for intra-network pilot projects and include travel funds for the annual MetNet Investigators Meeting.
Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), nonprofits (501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3)), for-profit organizations, government agencies, special district governments, tribal governments and organizations, and foreign organizations. Applications involving foreign subawards or subcontracts are prohibited as of May 1, 2025; unfunded international collaborations and foreign components remain permissible. No cost share is required.
Maximum direct costs are $500,000 per year for project periods up to five years. Projects must use integrative systems-level approaches to address specific metastasis research questions and integrate with NCI's Metastasis Research Network (MetNet), a collection of U54 Research Centers launched in 2021. Proposed projects should emphasize one or more central MetNet themes: dormancy, early dissemination, cellular and/or physical microenvironment crosstalk, or mechanisms of metastatic cell responses to therapies. Focus areas include early dissemination from lung, prostate, pancreas, liver, kidney, bladder, and ovary cancers; metastasis to bone, lungs, or rare sites; and mechanisms in cancers with rising mortality or health disparities.
U01 awardees are required to participate in all MetNet activities, including serving as Steering Committee members. Award recipients must comply with NIH Grants Policy Statement requirements, share resources and data across the network, and submit annual Research Performance Progress Reports.
Scientific merit review occurs in November, January, and April, with advisory council review following. Earliest possible start dates are April, July, and October. This opportunity falls under CFDA 93.396 (Cancer Biology Research).
Synopsis
The National Cancer Institute's (NCI) Metastasis Research Network (MetNet) is a collection of U54 Research Centers that support using systems-level approaches to understand pressing questions in metastasis. The overall goal of the MetNet is to advance our understanding of metastasis as a whole body, systems-level problem to develop a comprehensive and cohesive picture of the processes involved. Through this Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO), the NCI invites applications for MetNet Research Projects. These Research Projects should be defined as discrete entities that use systems-level approaches to address gaps and opportunities in metastasis research to integrate into the MetNet and complement ongoing research across the Network.
Eligibility
Refer to Section III. Eligibility Information in the NOFO for additional information on eligibility.Foreign Organizations/International CollaborationsNon-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Organizations) are eligible to apply.Non-domestic (non-U.S.) components of U.S. Organizations are eligible to apply.Foreign components, as defined in the NIH Grants Policy Statement, are allowed.NIH will no longer issue awards (i.e., new, renewal, or non-competing continuation) to domestic or foreign entities that involve foreign subawards/subcontracts. All NIH-funded research involving foreign subawards/subcontracts must be submitted in response to a NOFO that is specifically designated for funded international collaborations. This new requirement was effective, May 1, 2025.Applications involving foreign subawards/subcontracts submitted in response to this NOFO will be deemed noncompliant and will not be considered for funding. This policy applies to all monetary international collaborations resulting in foreign subawards/subcontracts, however, it does not preclude unfunded international collaborations or foreign components, funding for foreign consultants, or procurement of unique equipment or supplies from foreign vendors.
