About this opportunity

The Gus Schumacher Nutrition Incentive Program Produce Prescription Program is seeking applicants to implement projects through February 28, 2024 aimed at improving dietary health, reducing food insecurity, and decreasing healthcare utilization and costs. The National Institute of Food and Agriculture at the United States Department of Agriculture will award approximately $5.28 million to eligible governmental agencies and non-profit organizations proposing to partner with healthcare providers to prescribe fresh fruits and vegetables. All applicants must consult with the GusNIP Nutrition Incentive Program Training, Technical Assistance, Evaluation, and Information Center and agree to participate in comprehensive program evaluation.

Funding will be provided through the Gus Schumacher Nutrition Incentive Program Federal Grant Program Number 10.331 for standard produce prescription projects of up to three years in duration and $500,000 in total per award. Successful applicants will be expected to improve dietary health, reduce individual and household food insecurity, and reduce healthcare use and associated costs through increased consumption of fruits and vegetables.

Synopsis

The primary goal and objective of the GusNIP Produce Prescription Program is to demonstrate and evaluate the impact of projects on (1) the improvement of dietary health through increased consumption of fruits and vegetables; (2) the reduction of individual and household food insecurity; and (3) the reduction in healthcare use and associated costs.
