About this opportunity

The Gus Schumacher Nutrition Incentive Program (GusNIP) Nutrition Incentive Program is a grant opportunity offered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA). The program aims to increase the purchase and consumption of fruits and vegetables among low-income consumers participating in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Nutrition Assistance Program (NAP). The program supports nutrition incentive projects that provide point-of-purchase incentives for fruit and vegetable purchases, as well as produce prescription programs that connect healthcare providers with patients to improve dietary health and food security. Eligible applicants include governmental agencies and non-profit organizations, and projects must partner with authorized SNAP/NAP retailers, comply with SNAP/NAP regulations, and participate in comprehensive program evaluation.

The program offers three funding tiers: Pilot Projects up to $100,000 for 12 months, Standard Projects up to $500,000 for up to 36 months, and Large Scale Projects over $500,000 for up to 36 months. The total anticipated funding available is $36.3 million, and projects must provide dollar-for-dollar matching funds. The application deadline is April 15, 2025, and the places of performance span across the United States, with a focus on serving underrepresented communities and geographies.

Synopsis

The GusNIP Nutrition Incentive Program presents the opportunity to bring together stakeholders from various parts of the food and healthcare systems to foster understanding of how they might improve the health and nutrition status of participating households. NIFA requests applications for the GusNIP Nutrition Incentive Program to support and evaluate projects intended to increase the purchase of fruits and vegetables by providing incentives at the point of purchase among income eligible consumers participating in the USDA Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) in all 50 States, the District of Columbia, Guam, and the United States Virgin Islands, in addition to income-eligible consumers participating in the USDA Nutrition Assistance Program (NAP) in Puerto Rico, American Samoa, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Islands.
