About this opportunity

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is soliciting cooperative agreement applications for the Educational Component of the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program (EDMAP) to train the next generation of geologic mappers through graduate and upper-level undergraduate student projects. Eligible applicants are public and private institutions of higher education with geoscience or related departments, with proposals submitted by faculty members (excluding federally employed faculty). Projects must include mentored field experiences focused on geologic mapping, coordination with State Geological Surveys, and production of geologic maps at detailed or intermediate scales (1:24,000 to 1:250,000), with deliverables submitted as high-quality digital PDF files conforming to Federal Geospatial Data Committee standards. Proposals will be evaluated on five criteria: coordination (10 points), justification (25 points), technical quality (25 points), mentorship (20 points), and budget (20 points). All applications must be submitted electronically through Grants.gov by May 26, 2026 at 5:00 PM EST.

The EDMAP program anticipates making 15 awards totaling approximately $1.5 million, with individual awards ranging up to $180,000. Maximum federal funding is $45,000 per 12 months ($90,000 over 24 months) for graduate students and $25,000 per 12 months ($50,000 over 24 months) for undergraduate students, with a mandatory 1:1 cost-sharing match from non-federal sources required for all direct and total project costs. The anticipated project start date is August 1, 2026, with project performance periods ranging from 12 to 24 months and end dates between July 30, 2027 and December 30, 2028. Indirect costs are capped at 18% of total direct costs, and all projects must comply with 2 CFR Part 200 audit requirements and maintain records for three years after final financial report submission.

Synopsis

The primary objective of the EDMAP component of the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program (NCGMP) is to train the next generation of geologic mappers. To do this, the NCGMP provides funds for graduate student and upper-level undergraduate student projects relevant to the creation of geologic maps (defined broadly as maps that characterize the solid Earth and/or its constituents). Through these cooperative agreements, the NCGMP hopes to expand the research and educational capacity of national academic programs that teach Earth science students the broad range of techniques relevant to geologic mapping and the analysis of field, geophysical, borehole, and remote sensing data. As of 2024, EDMAP has funded more than 1,501 students from more than 177 universities. A list of funded FY2025 EDMAP projects can be found in Attachment D of this announcement.
