About this opportunity
The U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs (OES) is seeking applications for a $400,000 cooperative agreement to implement a project that will improve technical aspects of mercury-free gold processing in the artisanal and small-scale gold mining sector in Colombia. Eligible applicants include U.S. and foreign non-profit organizations and public international organizations with expertise in this area and a proven track record of developing mercury-free gold processing technologies. The 36-month project aims to pilot promising non-mercury technologies, train miners in their use, and develop sustainable equipment supply chains. Applications will be evaluated based on project design quality, organizational capacity, ability to achieve objectives, budget justification, and monitoring/sustainability plans. The deadline for submitting applications is July 3, 2023.
This grant opportunity is part of the Department of State's Environmental and Scientific Partnerships and Programs (CFDA 19.017), which supports sustainable growth through international partnerships to address environmental, scientific, and health concerns. The project will focus on Colombia, with the goal of transitioning small-scale gold mining operations from mercury-based to mercury-free extraction methods to reduce environmental contamination.
