About this opportunity
The Teaching Health Center Graduate Medical Education (THCGME) Program, administered by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), seeks to fund primary care residency training programs in community-based ambulatory patient care centers. The program aims to prepare medical and dental residents to provide high-quality care, particularly in rural and underserved communities, with a focus on developing competencies across diverse populations. Eligible applicants include community-based ambulatory patient care centers such as Federally Qualified Health Centers, community mental health centers, rural health clinics, and Indian Health Service facilities. Applications will be evaluated based on five key criteria: Purpose and Need, Response to Program Purpose, Impact, Organizational Information/Resources/Capabilities, and Support Requested. The application deadline is October 20, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. ET, with electronic submissions required through Grants.gov.
The program will provide $47.6 million in fiscal year 2026, with an anticipated 43 grant awards ranging from $160,000 to $3,840,000 per award. The funding will support direct and indirect expenses for approved graduate medical residency training programs in specialties including Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, and Dentistry. The performance period spans three years, from July 1, 2026, to June 30, 2029, with a focus on increasing the supply of primary care medical and dental residents trained in community-based settings. Awardees will be expected to train 4-12 resident Full-Time Equivalents (FTEs) per program, with a particular emphasis on serving medically underserved areas and rural communities across the United States.
Synopsis
