About this opportunity
The National Cancer Institute is soliciting applications through October 19, 2026, for sustained support of informatics technologies serving cancer research via U24 clinical trial optional cooperative agreements, with a total commitment of $1.8 million to fund 2 awards of up to $600,000 in direct costs per year over a maximum five-year project period.
Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), 501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, for-profit organizations, state and local governments, tribal entities (federally recognized and not federally recognized), and foreign organizations. The program is open to a broad range of entity types including county governments, city/township governments, special district governments, independent school districts, and public or Indian housing authorities.
This solicitation funds the sustainment phase of the Informatics Technology for Cancer Research (ITCR) Program, focusing on maintaining and evolving existing, widely-adopted informatics tools and resources rather than early-stage development. Applicants must demonstrate that their technology has had significant documented impact on cancer research across discovery biology, population studies, clinical-translational research, cancer treatment and diagnosis, early detection, risk assessment and prevention, cancer control and epidemiology, or cancer health disparities. Successful applications require clear justification for continued maintenance, evidence of benefit to the cancer research field, mechanisms for assessing and maximizing resource value to researchers, and plans supporting close engagement between resource and targeted research community.
Projects must allocate 10 percent of annual direct costs (starting in budget period 2) to collaborative ITCR activities, commit minimum effort of 1.8 person-months per year for single-PI projects or 1.2 person-months per year for multi-PI projects, and include annual meeting travel support. Deliverables include a Data Management and Sharing Plan (maximum 2 pages) and a Software and Model Sharing Plan addressing open-source licensing, machine learning model documentation with model cards, and long-term sustainment strategies.
Scientific review emphasizes demonstrated impact on cancer research, investigator qualifications in community engagement, innovation relative to competing resources, operational soundness, and institutional capacity. The program operates under Assistance Listing Numbers 93.393, 93.394, 93.395, 93.396, and 93.399 with substantial programmatic involvement through an ITCR Steering Committee governing collaborative activities. Award notices are anticipated in July 2027, with project start dates beginning October 1, 2027.

This Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) solicits applications for the continued development and sustainment of high value informatics research resources to improve the acquisition, management, analysis, and dissemination of data and knowledge across the cancer research continuum including cancer biology, cancer treatment and diagnosis, early cancer detection, risk assessment and prevention, cancer control and epidemiology. As a component of the NCI's Informatics Technology for Cancer Research (ITCR) Program, this NOFO is focused on sustaining operations and maintaining and evolving the scientific relevance of existing, widely-adopted informatics tools and resources. This is in contrast to early-stage and advanced development efforts to generate these tools and resources that will be supported by companion ITCR NOFOs. The central mission of ITCR is to promote research-driven informatics technology across the development lifecycle to address priority needs in cancer research. In order to be successful, the application must provide clear justification for why the research resource should be maintained and how it has benefited and will continue to benefit the cancer research field. In addition, mechanisms for assessing and maximizing the value of the resource to researchers and supporting close engagement between the resource and the targeted research community should be described.
This NOFO invites applications to support the sustained operations of informatics technology resources that support a wide range of cancer research, including discovery biology, population studies, as well as clinical and translational research. The emphasis is on sustaining resources that have had a demonstrated impact on cancer research. In addition, all projects proposed in response to this NOFO must involve the following general attributes:
- Evidence that the technology has had significant impact on cancer research to date and the sustainment plan will lead to the continued advancement of cancer research
- Robust plans for supporting the end-user community including documentation, training, and other outreach activities
- Clear processes for engaging end users to address emerging needs of the targeted research communities to ensure that the research resource maintains relevance to the research it supports
