About this opportunity

The Department of Energy's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) is offering the Sustainable Propane and Renewable Chemicals (SPARC) grant opportunity, which seeks to fund research and development projects focused on producing value-added chemicals and sustainable propane/liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) from biomass and waste resources. The program has two topic areas: Topic Area 1 supports development of new bio-based chemicals production methods, while Topic Area 2 pursues new pathways for bio-based propane/LPG. Eligible applicants include a wide range of domestic entities such as higher education institutions, for-profit organizations, nonprofits, state/local governments, and Indian Tribes. Proposals will be evaluated on criteria like greenhouse gas emission reductions, technical feasibility, and project team expertise.

The SPARC program has up to $23 million in FY2025 funding available, with up to $15 million for Topic Area 1 (0-8 awards of $1-2.5 million each) and up to $8 million for Topic Area 2 (0-4 awards of $1-2 million each). Projects must demonstrate at least 70% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional processes and meet specific technical metrics. The performance period is 36 months starting in January 2026, and a 20% cost share is required (10% for Tribes/Tribal Nations).
