About this opportunity

The Indian Health Service is forecasting a grant program to fund suicide prevention, intervention, and postvention efforts among American Indian and Alaska Native populations, with application details to be posted in the Federal Register.

Eligible applicants are federally recognized Indian tribes as defined by 25 U.S.C. 1603(14), tribal organizations as defined by 25 U.S.C. 1603(26), and urban Indian organizations as defined by 25 U.S.C. 1603(29). The program also welcomes nonprofit inter-tribal organizations, nonprofit urban Indian organizations contracting with the Indian Health Service under Title V of the Indian Health Care Improvement Act, and public or private nonprofit health and education entities and State and local government health agencies.

The primary program objectives are reducing suicide among AI/AN populations by improving care coordination, expanding culturally appropriate behavioral health services, and implementing early intervention strategies for at-risk AI/AN youth. Funded projects support Tribal and community-driven suicide prevention, intervention, and postvention efforts that promote cross-system collaboration and engage families, youth, and community partners.

Project periods are limited to five years or less, with continuation applications submitted annually on a noncompetitive basis within the award period. Recent awards in this portfolio have ranged from approximately $1.98 million to $6 million over five-year periods.

Evaluation criteria include the statement of problems requiring solution, need for assistance, expected results or benefits, soundness of the project approach, key personnel capability, and adequacy of management controls. Consideration is given to demonstrative aspects and project compatibility with overall Indian Health Service goals.

This program is listed under CFDA 93.654, Indian Health Service Behavioral Health Programs.
