About this opportunity

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) is soliciting applications for Specialized Programs of Research Excellence (SPORE) P50 Research Center Grants supporting translational cancer research with application due dates September 25 in 2027, 2028, and 2029; a clinical trial is required as a specific aim within at least one research project.

Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), 501(c)(3) nonprofits, for-profit organizations, state and local governments, tribal governments (federally and non-federally recognized), faith-based organizations, and regional organizations. Non-U.S. entities and foreign components are not eligible. No cost share is required. Applicants must request a maximum of $1,400,000 in direct costs per year, with an additional $120,000 per year available for qualified Early Detection, Prevention, or Population Science Research Projects. The maximum project period is five years. NCI anticipates approximately six to ten SPORE awards per year.

SPOREs must focus on organ-specific cancers or highly related cancer groups derived from the same organ system (such as gastrointestinal, neuroendocrine, or head and neck cancers). Other programmatically appropriate groups may center on a common biological mechanism, shared infectious agent, dysregulated signaling pathway, or cross-cutting themes such as pediatric cancers or epigenetics. Research must be translational, grounded in human biology using cellular, molecular, structural, biochemical, and genetic approaches, and must reach a translational human endpoint within the project period. Based on proposed research, applications may receive joint funding from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR).

Applicants must meet a minimum research base of four independent investigators with peer-reviewed research grants or active NCI-sponsored clinical trial leadership. Applications must include an Overall component, required Administrative Core and Biospecimen/Pathology Core, three to five Research Projects with human endpoints, a Developmental Research Program, a Career Enhancement Program, and optional additional Shared Resources Cores. Applications undergo scientific merit review followed by National Cancer Advisory Board review, with funding decisions based on scientific and technical merit, program relevance, and program balance consistent with NCI and NIH strategic priorities. The opportunity is listed under CFDA 93.395 (Cancer Treatment Research) and CFDA 93.121 (Oral Diseases and Disorders Research).

Synopsis

Through this Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO), the National Cancer Institute (NCI) invites applications for P50 Research Center Grants for Specialized Programs of Research Excellence (SPOREs). Based on the proposed research, applications may be jointly funded with the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR). This is a re-issuance of PAR-23-284. The program will fund P50 SPORE grants to support state-of-the-art investigator-initiated translational research that will contribute to improved prevention, early detection, diagnosis, and treatment of an organ-specific cancer or a highly related group of cancers. The research supported through this program must be translational and be based on human biology research using cellular, molecular, structural, biochemical, and/or genetic experimental approaches. SPORE projects must reach a translational human endpoint within the project period of the grant.

Eligibility

Refer to Section III. Eligibility Information in the NOFO for additional information on eligibility.Foreign Organizations/International Collaborations:Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Organization) are not eligible to apply.Non-domestic (non-U.S.) components of U.S. Organizations are not eligible to apply.Foreign components, as defined in the NIH Grants Policy Statement, are not allowed.
