About this opportunity
The National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA), a civilian agency within the Department of Agriculture, is soliciting research grant applications for the Special Research Grants Program Potato Breeding Research. The program aims to support potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) research focused on varietal development and testing through conventional breeding and biotechnological genetics to develop improved potato varieties. Applicants must provide an industry support letter, demonstrate stakeholder engagement, include a data management plan, and outline an extension and outreach strategy. Research priorities include developing potato varieties with resistance to pests and diseases, improving water and nutrient use efficiency, identifying desirable yield and quality traits, and developing high-throughput selection methods. Applications will be subjected to a merit review by a panel of qualified scientists, with evaluation criteria detailed in the Request for Applications (RFA).
The grant opportunity offers anticipated program funding of $3,703,050, with individual award ranges between $500,000 and $1,500,000. Four awards are expected to be made for region-based, multi-state research projects. The application deadline is August 14, 2025, with an expected review and approval process ranging from 30 to 180 days. The program is designed to support research that can quickly bring improved potato varieties to commercial producers, targeting land-grant universities, research institutions, and other eligible agricultural research organizations. Grant recipients will be required to maintain detailed records and comply with federal regulations throughout the grant period.
