About this opportunity

The National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) is seeking applied research proposals to support the development of a vibrant, robust, and profitable U.S. aquaculture industry through the Special Research Grants Program for Aquaculture Research. The program supports science-based research and technology addressing four priority areas: genetics and genomics of commercial aquaculture species, critical pest and disease issues, maximizing farmer profit through novel technologies and production systems, and economic research for increasing profitability. Eligible applicants include state agricultural experiment stations, colleges and universities, research foundations, federal agencies, national laboratories, private organizations, and individual U.S. citizens with demonstrable research capacity. Applications must directly involve U.S. aquaculture industry participation, include a comprehensive data management plan, and present a clear technology transfer strategy to end-users. The application deadline is June 15, 2026, at 5:00 PM Eastern Time, with projects required to begin before October 1, 2026. Proposals will undergo a two-step review process consisting of administrative screening followed by scientific peer review using four equally weighted evaluation criteria: proposal relevance and effectiveness, technical and scientific merit, overall qualifications of applicants, and data management plan quality.

The program offers approximately $1,813,840 in total funding for FY 2026, with individual awards ranging from $50,000 to $300,000 and an anticipated 6-7 awards made. Funded projects will have a maximum duration of 24 months with potential eligibility for a no-cost third-year extension, and no matching funds are required. Indirect costs cannot exceed 30 percent of total federal funds awarded. Research activities will be conducted at recipient institutions and collaborating partner organizations throughout the United States.

Synopsis

The purpose of the Special Research Grants Program for Aquaculture Research (Assistance Listing Number 10.200) is to support the development of a vibrant, robust, and profitable aquaculture industry in the United States by generating new, science-based information and technology to address industry constraints. Applied research is needed to develop practical solutions that will facilitate growth and remove limitations to expansion of the United States aquaculture industry.
