About this opportunity

This federal grant opportunity, titled "Social disconnection and Suicide Risk in Late Life (R21 Clinical Trial Optional)", is being offered by the Department of Health and Human Services' National Institutes of Health. The grant aims to fund research projects that investigate the link between social isolation, loneliness, and suicide risk among older adults. Key objectives include identifying neurobiological and environmental mechanisms associated with social disconnection that increase suicide risk, developing and testing interventions to enhance social connection and prevent late-life suicide, and modifying service delivery models to prevent suicide. Eligible applicants include nonprofit organizations, state/local governments, small businesses, and higher education institutions. The application deadline is September 7, 2026.

The funding mechanism is an R21 grant, which provides up to $275,000 over 2 years. Recent awards under the Mental Health Research Grants program, which is funding this opportunity, have ranged from smaller exploratory grants around $50,000 to large multi-year projects exceeding $3 million. Research activities are generally conducted at the facilities of recipient organizations across the United States.

Synopsis

This initiative seeks to solicit applications for research projects that address the link between social disconnection including both objective social isolation as well as perceived social isolation (otherwise known as loneliness) and suicide in late-life. Emphasis is placed on research that identifies neurobiological and environmental mechanisms associated with social isolation and loneliness that increase risk for suicidal thoughts and behavior in late-life, that uses an experimental therapeutics approach to identify targets and develop and test interventions to prevent late-life suicide, and that develops new and modifies existing service delivery models to enhance social connection in late-life to prevent suicide.
