About this opportunity

The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), in collaboration with the National Institute on Aging, is awarding a single-source cooperative agreement to fund post-stroke vascular contributions to cognitive impairment and dementia (VCID) research, with applications due September 28, 2026. This non-competitive funding opportunity is restricted to Massachusetts General Hospital; only principal investigators and project directors previously associated with the original U19 award (RFA-NS-19-012) to that institution are eligible to apply.

NINDS intends to commit up to $10,000,000 in total FY 2027 funds, with direct costs not to exceed $26,700,000 over a 4-year project period. The award funds one large prospective clinical research study to determine associations between stroke subtypes and subsequent cognitive impairment and dementia in U.S. post-stroke populations. The application must include five required components: Overall, Administrative Core, Statistics Core, Recruitment and Retention Core, and Repository Core, each with specific page limitations and staffing requirements submitted in multi-project format. The Contact PD/PI must commit at least 3 calendar months annually to the project and serve as Administrative Core Lead.

The research strategy must address stroke subtypes, cognitive trajectories, biomarkers including amyloid-beta and tau, and comorbidities along the Alzheimer's Disease spectrum, with demonstrated robust progress from the initial award. A Data Management and Sharing Plan is mandatory. Applicants must adhere to MarkVCID standards for clinical data and biospecimens and coordinate with existing VCID resources. Substantial NIH programmatic involvement includes a Project Steering Committee with NINDS Project Scientists, an independent Oversight and Safety Monitoring Board, and quarterly conference calls. The award operates under CFDA 93.853 (Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders) and CFDA 93.866 (Aging Research).
