About this opportunity
The National Institutes of Health National Center for Advancing Translational Science (NCATS) is forecasting a cooperative agreement opportunity in health research under the Selective Precision Targeting (SPoT) initiative, with no application due date specified in this forecast announcement.
NCATS seeks to establish mechanisms for precise therapeutic drug delivery to hard-to-reach body locations—including the blood-brain barrier, central nervous system, placenta, retina, and tumors—using microphysiological systems (MPS) and targeted delivery methods such as engineered nanoparticles, extracellular vesicles, and focused ultrasound. The initiative goals include optimizing nanoparticle targeting to specific organs or cells, assessing biodistribution and off-target effects via multi-organ MPS, providing evidence of functional cargo activity, and determining optimal routes of administration.
Eligible applicants include public and private higher education institutions, federally recognized and non-federally recognized tribal organizations and governments, county and state governments, for-profit organizations, small businesses, public or Indian housing authorities, 501(c)(3) nonprofits, and independent school districts.
Biomedical investigators at any nonprofit or for-profit organization engaged in biomedical research are eligible. Evaluation criteria include scientific merit and significance, technical adequacy of experimental design, investigator competency, adequacy of facilities and resources, budget necessity relative to project scope, relevance to program objectives, and fund availability. Initial peer review is conducted by committees of subject matter experts; recommendations advance to the NCATS Advisory Council for final award determination.
Project periods range from one to seven years. Awards are funded through electronic transfer. Grantees must retain financial, programmatic, and supporting records for three years from annual financial status report submission.
The opportunity operates under Assistance Listing 93.350 (National Center for Advancing Translational Science) and is authorized by 42 U.S. Code 287a (Cures Acceleration Network).
Forecast synopsis
The National Center for Advancing Translational Science (NCATS) seeks to advance its mission by establishing a new initiative called Selective Precision Targeting (SPoT) to determine a mechanism for precise and on-target therapeutic drug delivery to specific hard-to-reach locations within the human body using microphysiological systems (MPS). Targeted drug-delivery systems, including engineered nanoparticles, extracellular vesicles or focused ultrasound, are methods for delivering medications to a specific area of the body (organ, tissue, or cell) to increase the concentration of the drug in that area. Hard-to-reach locations in the body include the blood-brain barrier, central nervous system, placenta, retina, or a tumor.
More specifically, the initiative goals are to:
- Optimize specific targeting of nanoparticle therapeutics to the target organ/cell of interest
- Assess biodistribution and off-target effects using a multi-organ microphysiological system
- Provide evidence of functional cargo activity
- Determine optimal route of administration
