About this opportunity
The Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award Institutional Research Training Grant (NRSA), administered by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) in partnership with the National Institutes of Health (NIH), seeks to support postdoctoral research training programs in biomedical, behavioral, and health services research focused on primary care. Eligible applicants are domestic public and private nonprofit institutions of higher education that have previously received funding under Sections 736, 739, or 747 of the Public Health Service Act between 2011 and 2025. Applications must include comprehensive project narratives addressing mentorship philosophy, research training objectives, program goals, performance management, and sustainability plans, along with detailed budgets supporting postdoctoral fellow stipends with mandatory 2% annual increases, tuition support up to $16,000 per fellow annually, and institutional costs capped at $12,400 per fellow per year. Merit review evaluates applications across six criteria: Need (15 points), Response (35 points), Performance Reporting and Evaluation (10 points), Impact (20 points), Resources and Capabilities (10 points), and Support Requested (10 points). The application deadline is May 29, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time, with expected award notices to be issued by July 1, 2026.
The funding opportunity provides approximately $9,566,800 in total available funding for Fiscal Year 2026, supporting an estimated 20 grants with individual award ranges of $134,653 to $500,000 per year over a five-year performance period from July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2031. Each award will be made in five consecutive 12-month budget periods, with indirect costs capped at 8 percent of modified total direct costs. Applicants must designate a Project Director with a PhD, MD, DO, DNP, PsyD, PharmD, or comparable doctoral degree and a minimum of three years of primary care experience, and postdoctoral fellows must be U.S. citizens, non-citizen nationals, or permanent residents committed to a minimum two-year training period in primary care research. Performance of work will take place at the applicant institution, with mandatory annual meeting attendance required at HRSA meetings in Rockville, Maryland, supplemented by quarterly online meetings and webinars.
Synopsis
The National Research Service Award (NRSA) program supports the training of postdoctoral researchers in biomedical, behavioral, and health services research. Funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and administered in part by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), the program aims to develop a skilled research workforce to advance scientific knowledge in primary care. Under HRSA, the NRSA program provides support to train postdoctoral health care professionals who are planning to pursue careers in biomedical and behavioral health research related to primary care. As the nation"s population grows and ages, the need for well-trained primary care researchers to study the complex array of issues facing the primary care workforce gains greater importance. The NRSA Institutional Research Training Grants administered by HRSA are awarded to eligible institutions to develop or enhance postdoctoral research training opportunities for individuals who are planning to pursue careers in primary care research.
