About this opportunity
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration is soliciting applications for Rural Emergency Medical Services Training grants, with an application deadline of July 16, 2026. Eligibility is statutorily limited to emergency medical services agencies operated by local or Tribal government (including fire-based and non-fire-based) or an emergency medical services agency that is a section 501(c)(3) organization exempt from tax under section 501(a) of title 26.
The program recruits and trains EMS personnel to provide immediate emergency care and rapid hospital transport in rural communities. First responders deliver life-saving interventions including opioid overdose reversal, buprenorphine initiation, CPR, and oxygen administration, helping reduce strain on local hospital resources.
Applications are awarded directly by SAMHSA following merit review, program analysis, and CSAT National Advisory Council concurrence. A 3-year records retention requirement applies; records must be retained beyond the 3-year period if final audit has not been completed or findings resolved.
This opportunity operates under CFDA 93.490, Center for Substance Abuse Treatment Projects of Regional and National Significance, which supports substance use disorder treatment access, quality improvement, recovery-oriented systems of care, opioid and overdose crisis response, and treatment workforce strengthening. Award amount, number of awards, period of performance, and place of performance are determined as part of the Notice of Funding Opportunity.
