About this opportunity

The National Institutes of Health is soliciting cooperative agreement applications to provide continuing support for a National Swine Resource and Research Center (NSRRC), a centralized national resource for creation, breeding, cryopreservation, and distribution of genetically modified swine models for biomedical research. This is a forecast notice; no specific application deadline is stated.

Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), 501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, state and local governments, tribal governments (federally recognized and other), small businesses, for-profit organizations, faith-based and community-based organizations, regional organizations, U.S. territories, and non-domestic entities.

The NSRRC consolidates essential functions to reduce variability and improve reproducibility across studies by providing consistent, high-quality, specific pathogen-free models. The Center eliminates redundancy and costs associated with individual laboratories maintaining separate breeding facilities, allowing investigators to focus on research rather than infrastructure. Beyond breeding and distribution, the Center offers genotyping and phenotyping services, infectious disease monitoring, protocol distribution, and training on model care and use. The Center also leads development of alternative or complementary approaches, including new approach methodologies (NAMs), alongside in vivo models.

Awards are made under CFDA 93.351 (Research Infrastructure Programs), administered by the NIH Office of Research Infrastructure Programs. Peer review assesses scientific merit, general significance, technical adequacy of experimental design, investigator competency, adequacy of facilities and resources, budget necessity, and relevance to program objectives. Applications undergo initial review by committees of biomedical research authorities, with recommendations forwarded to the NIH Council of Councils for final review and recommendation.

Forecast synopsis

This Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) encourages applications to provide continuing support for a National Swine Resource and Research Center (NSRRC). The NSRRC aims to enable gold-standard science in biomedical research by serving as a centralized national resource for the creation, breeding, cryopreservation, and distribution of genetically modified models. By consolidating these essential functions, the NSRRC significantly reduces variability and improves reproducibility across studies, ensuring that researchers have access to consistent, high-quality, specific pathogen-free models. Centralizing the resource also eliminates redundancy and high costs associated with individual laboratories maintaining separate facilities and breeding programs for these models, allowing investigators to focus their efforts on research rather than infrastructure. Additionally, the NSRRC provides genotyping and phenotyping services, infectious disease monitoring, and protocol distribution to facilitate their use for biomedical research. The Center also serves as a source of information and training related to the care and use of these models in biomedical research to study human health and disease and suitability of a model's faithful representation of the biological system(s) proposed to be studied. The Center serves as a resource to lead the development of alternative or complementary approaches available, including new approach methodologies (NAMs), alongside in vivo models.
