About this opportunity
The National Cancer Institute is soliciting applications for research in cancer epidemiology cohort studies with a due date of July 5, 2029, under the U01 cooperative agreement mechanism (CFDA 93.393). Clinical trials are not allowed. Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), nonprofits (501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3)), for-profit organizations, state and local governments, tribal governments (federally and non-federally recognized), and foreign organizations; however, foreign subawards are prohibited.
The program supports three research approaches: hypothesis-driven research using established cohorts, science-driven expansion of recently formed cohorts, and formation of new cohorts. All applications must demonstrate rigorous community engagement with community advisory boards, robust recruitment and retention strategies, and long-term sustainability planning. Applicants must comply with NIH data sharing policies including FAIR principles, maintain data management and sharing plans, sustain public-facing cohort websites, and deposit non-genomic data into NIH-designated repositories. For new survivor cohorts, applications must collect data across five domains: disease characteristics, individual survivor characteristics, treatment and follow-up care, behavioral and lifestyle factors, and quality of life outcomes.
The maximum project period is five years with unlimited budget authority based on actual project needs. Program Directors and Principal Investigators must commit minimum 1.8 person-months effort annually (1.2 for multiple PIs per NCI policy). Quarterly application deadlines occur September 5, 2026, through June 5, 2029, with peer review and award cycles spanning March through July of the following year. Scientific review evaluates applications on research significance and innovation, rigor and feasibility of approach, and expertise and resources. Under the cooperative agreement mechanism, NCI provides substantial programmatic involvement including participation in Cohort Program Steering Committees, annual meetings at Bethesda or virtually, and ongoing scientific guidance.
Synopsis
Through this Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO), the National Cancer Institute (NCI) encourages grant applications to support research in cancer epidemiology cohort studies that address specific knowledge gaps in cancer etiology and survivorship. Applications should include hypothesis-based research, support for cohort infrastructure and/or maintenance, continued follow-up, and sharing of data and biospecimen resources as appropriate.
Eligibility
Refer to Section III. Eligibility Information in the NOFO for additional information on eligibility.Foreign Organizations/International Collaborations:Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Organizations) are eligible to apply.Non-domestic (non-U.S.) components of U.S. Organizations are eligible to apply.Foreign components, as defined in the NIH Grants Policy Statement, are not allowed.
