About this opportunity

The National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities is soliciting applications for a Research Centers in Minority Institutions (RCMI) Coordinating Center under a cooperative agreement, with applications due August 7, 2026. NIMHD will fund one award with an annual budget cap of $3.5 million in direct costs over a maximum five-year project period, committing $5 million in FY 2026. Eligible applicants include higher education institutions, nonprofits, for-profit organizations, tribal governments, and state and local governments located in the United States and its territories that have received less than $50 million annually in total NIH support or less than $25 million annually in NIH R01 awards over the past three fiscal years, and that award doctorate degrees in health professions or health-related sciences.

The RCMI Coordinating Center will coordinate activities across RCMI U54 Centers and the Clinical Research Network, develop common metrics and data elements for prospective program evaluation, maintain centralized databases tracking investigator career trajectories and research outcomes, support a clinical research pilot project program ($100,000–$150,000 annually per project for one to two years), convene annual grantee meetings and monthly video conferences, and provide outreach and dissemination services via website and newsletters.

Applications require a comprehensive research strategy addressing collaboration mechanisms, database development, evaluation plans, letters of institutional support, data management and sharing plans, and a resource sharing plan. Applicants must register on SAM.gov, obtain a Unique Entity Identifier, register with eRA Commons, and ensure all PDs/PIs have ORCID IDs. Applications will undergo scientific merit review by an appropriate Scientific Review Group followed by review by the National Advisory Council on Minority Health and Health Disparities. The Assistance Listing number is 93.307.

Synopsis

In response to a longstanding congressional mandate (P.L. 98-619, Departments of Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education and Related Agencies Appropriation Act, 1985), NIMHD invites applications from eligible institutions to establish a national coordinating center (CC) for the Research Centers in Minority Institutions (RCMIs) initiative. The RCMI CC will coordinate activities across funded RCMI U54 Centers, prospectively evaluate the overall RCMI program, and serve as a national resource to help these centers achieve their primary goals. The RCMI CC will be responsive to requests generated by RCMI site key personnel, NIMHD, NIH, the scientific community, and the general public.
