About this opportunity
This Request for Information (RFI) is issued by the U.S. Department of Energy Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) to solicit input on the development of technologies to recover high energy-value materials from wastewater. The targeted materials include nutrients (ammonia and phosphorus) and critical minerals such as lithium and rare earth elements. ARPA-E is seeking input from the research community on novel, energy-efficient, and durable technologies for selective recovery of these materials as high-quality feedstock that can be directly integrated into existing supply chains. The RFI covers topics such as ion-selective adsorbents and membranes, water-gas selective membranes, electrochemical separation, and temperature- or pressure-driven separations. ARPA-E also seeks feedback from potential end users and beneficiaries on wastewater streams, treatment operations, and factors influencing the adoption of new recovery technologies. Responses to this RFI are due by June 5, 2024 and will inform the possible formulation of future research programs by ARPA-E under the Advanced Research Projects Agency - Energy (CFDA 81.135) grant program.
As this is an RFI and not an application for financial assistance, no award values or budget ranges are specified. The RFI is intended to gather information that will guide the potential development of future programs by ARPA-E, but does not involve the procurement of any specific products or services at this time.
Synopsis
This is a Request for Information (RFI) only. This RFI is not accepting applications for financial assistance. The purpose of this RFI is solely to solicit input for ARPA-E consideration to inform the possible formulation of future programs. The purpose of this Request for Information (RFI) is to solicit input for a potential ARPA-E program focused on the development of technologies to recover high energy-value materials from wastewater to reduce energy demands and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with conventional sourcing and waste stream treatment. Wastewater in this RFI is broadly defined, and includes municipal, livestock, industrial, and mining sources. High energy-value materials under consideration are nutrients (i.e., ammonia and phosphorus) and critical minerals, where the latter are a group of 50 elements in the periodic table including lithium and rare earth elements (REEs).
