About this opportunity
The Department of Health and Human Services Administration for Community Living (ACL) is soliciting applications for a Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center (RERC) on Universal Design Applications under grant number HHS-2025-ACL-NIDILRR-REGE-0120. The purpose of this grant is to fund research, development, and evaluation activities focused on universally designed products and built environments that promote positive outcomes for people with disabilities in the domains of health/function, employment, or community living. Key requirements include conducting advanced research at specified stages (intervention development, efficacy, or scale-up evaluation) and development activities (proof of product or adoption stage). Eligible applicants include states, public/private agencies, institutions of higher education, and tribal organizations. Important dates include a Letter of Intent due January 24, 2025, an informational conference call on January 13, 2025, and full applications due March 6, 2025.
This grant provides $975,000 per year for a 60-month project period with five 12-month budget periods, beginning September 1, 2025. The grantee must also coordinate with NIDILRR's technology transfer center and hold a state-of-science conference in year 4. No cost sharing or matching is required.

Update #2 · Latest ·
These modifications have been made to the NOFO: In Section III.1, the first paragraph was removed. This paragraph described an Executive Order from the previous administration. In Section V, language in the Project Staff criterion was removed. Specifically, the language in the second factor -- about sexual orientation and gender identity - was removed. - The purpose of the RERC program is to improve the effectiveness of services authorized under the Rehabilitation Act by conducting advanced engineering research on and development of innovative technologies that are designed to solve particular rehabilitation problems or to remove environmental barriers. RERCs also demonstrate and evaluate such technologies, facilitate service delivery system changes, stimulate the production and distribution of new technologies and equipment in the private sector, and provide training opportunities. Under this particular RERC priority, the grantee must conduct research and development activities toward universally designed products or built environments that promote positive health and function, employment, or community living outcomes among people with disabilities. This grant will have a 60-month project period, with five 12-month budget periods.
