About this opportunity
The Department of Health and Human Services Administration for Community Living is seeking applicants for a Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center (RERC) grant focused on developing innovative rehabilitation technologies and products for children with orthopedic disabilities. The RERC must conduct advanced engineering research and development, demonstrate and evaluate new technologies, facilitate service delivery system changes, stimulate private sector production and distribution, and provide training opportunities. Key requirements include involving children with disabilities and stakeholders, ensuring racial/ethnic diversity, conducting a state-of-the-science conference, and developing a technology transfer plan. Eligible applicants include states, public/private agencies, institutions of higher education, and Indian tribes. The opportunity has a letter of intent due on 02/18/2025, an application due date of 04/18/2025, and an informational conference call on 02/10/2025.
This grant provides $975,000 in federal funding for a 60-month project period with five 12-month budget periods. The anticipated project start date is 09/01/2025. The RERC must focus on developing rehabilitation and assistive technologies, including those related to virtual reality, robotic-assisted therapy, exoskeletons, functional electrical stimulation, and artificial intelligence applications for children with orthopedic disabilities such as cerebral palsy, spina bifida, limb differences, scoliosis, and muscular dystrophy.

Specifically, the language in the second factor -- about sexual orientation and gender identity - was removed. - The purpose of the RERC program is to improve the effectiveness of services authorized under the Rehabilitation Act by conducting advanced engineering research on and development of innovative technologies that are designed to solve particular rehabilitation problems or to remove environmental barriers. RERCs also demonstrate and evaluate such technologies, facilitate service delivery system changes, stimulate the production and distribution of new technologies and equipment in the private sector, and provide training opportunities. Under this particular RERC priority, the grantee must conduct research and development activities toward new rehabilitation technologies and products that promote positive health and function and community living outcomes among children with orthopedic disabilities. This grant will have a 60-month project period, with five 12-month budget periods.
