About this opportunity

The Department of Energy's Office of Science Fusion Energy Sciences (FES) program is seeking applicants for its Private Facility Research (PFR) program, which will provide $23 million in funding to support public research at private fusion facilities. The program offers two types of awards: Public Research Awards (Standard awards of $2-21 million and Novel Diagnostic Development awards of $25,000-$3 million) and Data Mirroring Awards ($25,000-$500,000), with project periods of 3-5 years. Pre-applications are required by February 19, 2025, with responses by March 5, 2025, and final applications due April 23, 2025. The program aims to leverage private sector fusion facilities while enabling public researchers to conduct peer-reviewed science, enhancing scientific rigor for mutual benefit.

The program is expected to make 1-8 awards, with funding provided through the Department of Energy's Office of Science Financial Assistance Program (CFDA 81.049). Eligible private facilities include those from companies like Commonwealth Fusion Systems, Ex-Fusion, General Fusion, and others expected to be operational by 2027. The program requires data openness, publication rights, and established data access prior to application submission.

Synopsis

The DOE SC program in Fusion Energy Sciences (FES) hereby announces its interest in applications for a Private Facility Research (PFR) program to support public research utilizing world leading experimental capabilities owned by private companies. Along the path to constructing Fusion Pilot Plants (FPPs), many private fusion companies are constructing interim small-to-large scale research facilities to establish the scientific and/or technological basis for their chosen fusion concepts. Since the research on these interim facilities is largely foundational in nature, the mission overlap between the public and private sectors is large. Consistent with the FES Building Bridges Vision[1], the PFR program serves as a bridge from boldly delivered private sector hardware back to foundational research expertise residing in the public sector. Through the program, public researchers will conduct open peer-reviewed science at private facilities, to enhance the scientific rigor and breadth of the existing private efforts for the mutual benefit of all involved. As with all thriving high-tech industries, a strong connection to foundational research is essential.
