About this opportunity

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is awarding approximately $156 million in Preventive Health and Health Services Block Grant funds to state governments, tribal governments (federally recognized), U.S. territories, and freely associated states, with applications due July 17, 2026. Exactly 61 awards are expected, distributed by formula across 50 states, the District of Columbia, five U.S. territories (Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa, Northern Mariana Islands), three freely associated states (Federated States of Micronesia, Marshall Islands, Republic of Palau), and three tribal entities (Kickapoo Tribe, Santee Sioux, Navajo Nation). No cost share is required. Award amounts vary significantly by population and eligible entity; New York receives $11.35 million, California $11.21 million, and Texas $6.73 million, while the Republic of Palau receives $35,312.

Recipients set their own goals and program objectives to address local public health needs using evidence-based, community-driven methods, with key focus areas including addressing emerging health threats, reducing premature death and disabilities, supporting local programs, and establishing data and surveillance systems. Recipients must attend an annual program meeting; block grant funds may cover coordinator travel. The budget and performance period runs September 1, 2026, through September 30, 2027. Unallowable costs include naloxone and syringe purchases, drug disposal programs, housing-first strategies, harm-reduction sites, clinical care, advertising campaigns, and lobbying activities. Salary rate limitation is $228,000 as of January 2026. Non-competing continuation awards are available contingent on satisfactory progress. CFDA 93.991.
